Waluta Camp

Camp Waluta

* Youth entering Kindergarten through Fifth Grade *

Camp Waluta is our traditional Summer Camp program that serves school-age youth.  This program is designed to provide opportunities for campers to explore safe and fun outdoor camp activities, all under the guidance of qualified specialists and counselors in a low  5:1 camper to staff ratio.

Children in Camp Waluta are placed into groups with children of the same age for each session.  Each group is led by a team of  reference and background checked counselors including a Senior Counselor, Junior Counselor and C.I.T.  Our low camper to staff ratio gives each child the individual attention they need to make friends, participate in new activities and have fun, while still allowing room for self-expression.  Campers will stay with their group for the duration of the week and rotate throughout the specialty activity areas on a daily basis with their group.

Activity areas are instructed by our college-aged staff, many of whom are currently pursuing degrees in Education or related fields.  Specialists are assigned to an activity area and focus their planning to coordinate with weekly themes.  Activity areas include:

  Sports and Games

Drama

         Nature

Arts and Crafts

Outdoor Cooking

* Camp Waluta's outdoor pool is guarded by two full time lifeguards and is supervised by the team of
counselors from each group participating in Swim.  The pool measures 2 - 4.5 feet in depth, and is
roped off according to swimmer's abilities.  All youth participate in swim lessons as a part of their
daily schedule.  Swim lessons are considered a prerequisite to free swim periods in the afternoon.

Discovery Camp

Discovery Camp

* Youth entering Grades 6 and 7 *

The Discovery Camp Program is Camp Fire's summer program option for middle school youth.  Discovery offers youth many different activities and time for individual choices on a daily basis.  Discovery campers play an active role in the planning of the daily schedule, and age-appropriate team and skill building activities are organized by the Specialists according to the group's interests.

The philosophy behind Camp Fire's Discovery Camp is that a relaxed atmosphere in a natural environment helps children to work within a group, make friends, build self-esteem, make good decisions and learn firsthand about the environment.  Discovery Camp takes full advantage of the 70+ acres of wooded trails behind the Camp to learn and practice new outdoor skills such as hiking and trail laying, fire building, outdoor shelter construction, tree and plant identification, and orienteering.  In addition to the schedule of daily activities, Discovery campers also have the opportunity to participate in long-term projects and to plan and implement their own Community Service Learning project.

Discovery campers also participate in weekly field trips off-Camp premises.  Field trips for this summer include: a day at Canobie Lake, Water Country, the Russian American Kid's Circus, Roger Williams Park Zoo, Monster Mini Golf & the Movies, Bear Brook State Park and more!
